Some of life’s greatest victories aren’t measured by a scoreboard. They’re measured by the courage to get back up and carry on, the confidence to try new activities, or the willingness to encourage someone else facing a similar journey.
Those victories were at the heart of our second annual Mission Gait All-Stars Night with the Richmond Flying Squirrels. Together, we celebrated five extraordinary individuals whose determination, resilience, and commitment to moving forward continue to inspire everyone around them. Each year, we induct a new class into Nutzy’s Walk of Fame to recognize individuals whose impact has advanced gait rehabilitation through education, patient empowerment, mentorship, and service (you can read more about their individual stories here).
There was a special sense of excitement in the air as our Mission Gait community gathered at the brand-new CarMax Park. We are incredibly grateful to the more than 100 supporters, family members, and friends who created a sea of blue and cheered enthusiastically for our All-Stars!
While the venue may have changed, the purpose remained the same: celebrating remarkable individuals and the inspiring journeys that brought them here!
It was especially inspiring to hear each All-Star’s story before they stepped onto the field to throw out a ceremonial first pitch. Carter returned to serving his community as a firefighter after losing his leg in the line of duty. Ricky’s story is a testament to the power of family, where love, encouragement and support flow in both directions. That bond was on full display as his grandson, Bryson, threw the first pitch on his behalf. Carol continues to inspire others through her passion for sports and an active lifestyle. Cheryl exemplifies determination through her commitment to maintaining her independence despite the odds. Emory reminds us that recovery is about the courage to say “yes” to embracing new opportunities.
The excitement didn’t end with the All-Star recognition. After trailing 7–2, the Flying Squirrels made an incredible comeback, scoring six runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn a 8–7 victory. The evening concluded with a spectacular fireworks show, a fitting finale to a night dedicated to resilience, perseverance, and celebrating what is possible.
Events like All-Stars Night remind us that rehabilitation extends far beyond the clinic. It is about rebuilding confidence, reconnecting with the community, and discovering what is possible with the support of others. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who attended and helped make the evening so special.
