Team Profile
Carolyn M. Lawrence, CID, ASID
Co-founder and Director of Operations/HR

Carolyn is a certified interior designer by profession, runs a physical therapy practice out of love, and is a dancer at heart. Originally from Maryland, Carolyn came to Richmond to attend Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts, where she graduated with a BFA in Interior Design. Her early career was spent as a commercial designer at several architectural firms, and in-house facility designer. She is a professional member of the American Society of Interior Designers, where she has served in a variety of positions on their board, including President of the Virginia Chapter.

In 2006, Carolyn came alongside her husband, David Lawrence MSPT, for the establishment of their physical therapy practice, Lawrence Rehabilitation – The Gait Center, because they believed patients (especially those with complex gait disabilities) deserved the highest level of care. Carolyn serves as Director of Operations/HR, managing patient in-take, medical billing, marketing, facility design, and office operations. Her years in design and project management adeptness seamlessly translated into efficiently handling the medical practice’s diverse needs.

Watching patients travel long distances from out-of-state, seeking their care, David and Carolyn recognized the need to make a measurable improvement in the quality of care of physical therapy across the profession, for patients everywhere, not just in their practice. So, they established Mission Gait Foundation in 2016 – which addresses this issue both domestically and internationally (with the continued work and expansion of Walking Free’s missions).

As a dancer, Carolyn understands the importance of movement and balance in one’s life – and the freedom and joy that comes with mobility. She considers it a privilege to volunteer as Mission Gait’s Director of Operations while lending her expertise in design, project management, and serving in any other capacity needed – helping to make a difference in patients’ lives.

Carolyn’s faith in God and love of dancing have remained constants throughout her life. You will find her at the dance studio several nights a week and taking in the theatre whenever possible! David and Carolyn live in a 100+ year old home in a historic district of RVA, which provides endless possibilities and inspiration for renovations. They are the proud parents of two young adult children! With a true love of travel, history, and architecture, Carolyn and David enjoy traveling the world!
